Born in Graz in 1940, Franz Ringel attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Graz
between 1954 and 1958. There he met Wolfgang Herzig and Drago Prelog. Ringel moved
to Vienna in 1958 and studied at the University of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine
Arts (1959-1960 under Hans Knesl and from 1960-1965 under Albert Paris Gütersloh).
Ringel's initially non-representational and colourful painting changed over time into a
representational, figurative pictorial world dominated by the central themes of Eros and
death. Ringel had his own studio in Vienna since 1972. The artist spent 1972-1973 in
Paris. Franz Ringel was a member of the Vienna Secession and the „Wirklichkeiten“
(realities) group, which was formed in 1968.
