1930-37 Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. 1937 Rome Prize. 1946-47 Frescoes in the Theresienkirche on the Hungerburg in Innsbruck. 1954-55 Murals in Innsbruck Central Station. 1960 Represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. 1961 Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize. 1964-81 Professor of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. 1979 Awarded the Austrian Decoration of Honour for Science and Art. 1995 Honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. 2000 Honorary citizen of the city of Vienna, Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star for Services to the Republic of Austria. Numerous major exhibitions at home and abroad, for example at the Chinese National Gallery, Beijing, 1998, at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna and at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, both in 1999. Most recently, a major exhibition dedicated to his drawings at the Albertina, 2011, and another exhibition there in 2018.
