Born in Lunz am See in 1948, Hans Kupelwieser attended the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna from 1970 to 1973. He then proceeded to study at the University of Applied Arts from 1976 to 1982 under Herbert Tasquil, Bazon Brock and Peter Weibel. He serves as professor and director at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Graz University of Technology since 1995. Hans Kupelwieser became known primarily as a sculptor and drew attention to himself, among other things, with sculptures realized in public space. Continuously moving in the border area between two- and three-dimensionality, his photographic work is just as important as his sculptural works. In both media, he is concerned with expanding the boundaries of genre and exploring technical possibilities. Particularly noteworthy, for example, are his photograms, which are produced without a camera and by direct light exposure of three-dimensional objects on photographic paper, resulting in large-scale works.
