In 1839, Alt travelled to Moravia and Bohemia, where he visited castles and the city of Prague. Alt then travelled to Galicia, where he was commissioned by the Viennese art dealer HF Müller to make studies of the country and people in this remote part of the empire for a work of the Austrian Monarchy: Tymiez on the Vistula, Wadowice, Alt-Sandecz and Pukla, some of which were transferred to the new process of chromo-lithography.
