The series of twelve views of Ischl was produced in 1823–24 on commission from Prince Metternich, who had summoned Ender to Ischl in the summer of 1823, where the entire court always took up residence. This series of watercolours served as the basis for the series of twelve original etchings published in 1828 by the Viennese publisher A. Strauss (Nebehay-Wagner 162) under the title “Ischel gezeichnet und gestochen von Thomas Ender in Wien”. – In 1828 and 1829, the watercolours on which the etchings were based were exhibited at the Academy in Vienna.
In contrast to the present watercolour “The Covered Bridge in Ischl”, the motif appears in the etching without any figurative elements in the foreground on the right.
