The landscape painter, engraver and etcher was born in Znojmo. In 1824 he entered the
sculpture class at the Academy in Vienna, where he remained until 1826. After further
training with the sculptor Josef Kempel in Vienna, he produced engravings for gold and
silverware manufacturers, but later devoted himself exclusively to landscape painting. His
numerous oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and etchings were created on study trips
through the Austrian Alps, where he had a particular fondness, and in Switzerland.
Despite their painterly conception, they are always realistic depictions of nature.
His sons Gustav Barbarini (1840-1909) and Emil Barbarini (1855-1933) also became
painters. His works can be found in the Albertina, the Kunsthistoisches Museum, the
Österreichische Galerie Belvedere and the Niederösterreichisches Landesmuseum,
among others.
